Extracurricular: Intro to Production Management, including information about new BPH Production Management and Tech training courses with Ben Pugh
Extracurricular is a series of sessions which will give you the opportunity to learn more about different jobs in the arts, sharing of artistic pathways, journeys and resources.
Ben Pugh is a consultant in production management. His session will include:
- Principles and approaches of good production management, looking at some useful ideas and tools.
- Covering how the technical and production teams come together across range of activities from theatre to festivals to arts installations and immersive environments.
- Participants will have the opportunity to work together with Ben through some examples looking at all the different aspects that fall into the production manager’s role.
For over 20 years, Ben has been delivering management infrastructure for projects, productions, festivals, and events in the creative and cultural industries, working across disciplines in theatre, music, visual arts, festival, digital, community and education.
As well as a long established practice in site specific theatre, Ben has been fortunate to work on major public events such as the opening of MIF in 2019, the PRSF New Music Biennale, Bradford Mela & Festival, and The York Mystery Plays.
Delivered work in a wide range of settings – from Mumbai to New York; encompassing public parks, heritage sites, theatres, museums, galleries, town squares, botanical gardens; everything from rugged moors to NCP car-parks.
The Production Manager ethos permeates through everything he does from long-term creative development to realisation on site. From detailed planning to co-ordination of teams, managing contractors and stakeholders, as well as delivering the production infrastructure on the ground.
As a management consultant, he has been working for a number of years providing strategic support and organisational development as well as a range of activities from developing major capital projects, to preparing policy frameworks, to securing licenses, to establishing charities.
Also, Ben has delivered training in various arts management disciplines at the University of Leeds, Leeds Beckett University, University of York and Manchester Met University through the Events, Music and Theatre departments.
As well as a degree in Technical Theatre Arts, he has an MBA from the Open University Business School – Including specialisms in Managing Performance and Change, Strategy, Creativity, Innovation and Marketing.
This session will be relaxed and informative throughout so you’ll be able to ask as many questions as you like, get to know Ben and hopefully pick up some new ideas that you might want to try out now or in the future.
