One-to-one Advice sessions with Hannah Bentley from Arts Council England 16 May

Latest News, News

Arts Council England (ACE) provides funding and support for artists, practitioners and creatives to develop their own skills and to run creative projects that engage other people.

On Monday, 16 May, we arranged for ACE’s Relationship Manager Hannah Bentley to hold in-person one-to-one information sessions to provide information and guidance around ACE in Bradford. These one-to-ones are specifically for disabled artists and artists from ethnically diverse backgrounds* as we know these artists are often underrepresented when it comes to accessing funding.

* Disabled person, person with a disability; wheelchair user; learning disabled, neuro-diverse, Autistic; d/Deaf or people with hearing impairments; blind, partially sighted or visually impaired people; people with long term health or mental health conditions or impairments.

We understand that how we describe ourselves is an integral part of our identity. We recognise and respect that there are different views about language describing people who experience racism. You may identify in one of the following ways or another way that isn’t mentioned here: People who experience racism, Global majority people, African, Caribbean, South, East or South-East Asian diaspora people and people seeking sanctuary in the UK.

About the one-to-ones

Each one-to-one will be in-person at Kala Sangam and will be 45 minutes long. They are for individual artists, practitioners, creatives, or small companies/artist groups. If you are a small company, collective or number of artists working together, you can all attend the same one-to-one and only need to sign up once.

You can use this time with Hannah for things like:

  • Finding out about the kinds of projects ACE support and learn more about them in general.
  • Talking about your creative project or idea and whether it might fit with ACE’s priorities.
  • Understanding the difference between Developing Your Creative Practice and Project Grants funds and which might suit you.
  • Asking questions to help you get your head around their 10 year ‘Let’s Create’ strategy and making a strong application to ACE.

As there are only a small number of one-to-ones available, therefore you must meet all of the following criteria to be eligible:

  • Working in a live performance art form (this includes – but is not limited to – theatre, dance, improv, music, spoken word, live art, performance poetry).
  • Identify as disabled or from an ethnically diverse background*
  • Have never had a meeting or advice session with an ACE before (this includes having had a meeting or one-to-one with Hannah or another ACE Relationship Manager)
  • Be living or working in the Bradford District.

Preparing for your one-to-one

Before your meeting please familiarise yourself with Arts Council’s England Let’s Create strategy by watching this short video:

The full Let’s Create strategy is available on Arts Council website, there are also Easy Read, Large Print and Audio & BSL versions all on this page

You might also want to look at information about Developing Your Creative Practice and Project Grants, which both provide funding to individuals, groups of artists, collectives and small companies:

Places will be allocated on a ‘first come, first served’ basis – this means that we’ll fill places in the order that people sign up until all the slots are taken.

When you sign up you will be asked to select all the time slots that you are available to meet with Hannah. Please only select ones that you can definitely do and don’t plan anything else at these times until you have heard from us – we will allocate your slot based on the options you have given us and then email you to confirm the time.  Unfortunately there will not be the option to change or request a different time.

Access support and other information

We can cover the costs of access support for your one-to-one.  This might include things like a support worker or ‘scribe’ to come with you, BSL or a language interpreter, or the costs for accessible transport.

When you sign up there is a section to tell us about the access support you need.

Are the one-to-ones in-person and where is Kala Sangam

Yes, all the one-to-ones will be in-person at Kala Sangam in one of their meeting rooms. Kala Sangam has step-free access through the grounds of Bradford Cathedral, an accessible toilet and a lift. You can see directions to Kala Sangam here

If you have other questions or need further information, drop us a line to [email protected]

(please note we are a very small team and will get back to you as soon as we can, but it might take us a few days)
