Artist Information

Jiayi Chen was part of our Empowered: LGBTQIA+ cohort and was one of our commissioned artists for our Make the Change event in September 2023. Jiayi is a contemporary artist fascinated by society’s one-dimensional nature and how everything is constantly changing. She believes art is a powerful medium that allows individuals to create “marks”, reflecting their unique cultural perspectives.

As a photographer, Jiayi sees each shot as a door to another world introduced by every creator, and she seeks to create new imagery and a unique visual language. Each of her images expresses her personal take on the society we live in and the problems we face.

“Through my art, I hope to inspire viewers to think critically about their own place in society and consider the perspectives and experiences of those around them. My contemporary art practice captures the intimate moments between my queer friends as a reflection of my lived experiences as a member of the local queer community, as well as exploring the nuances of gender expression. My work is also based on my personal experience of almost being abandoned after birth because of my gender. I aim to amplify the voices and stories of marginalized individuals, particularly those who identify as LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC.”

Jiayi’s work incorporates documentary photography at queer cabaret nights, and protests but also captures intimate moments between queer couples. Pushing at the boundaries of what is considered acceptable in mainstream society, she sees her artwork as activism too.

“I believe that my art has the power to spark social change and feel proud to use my work as a tool for activism to amplify the voices and stories of marginalized individuals, who are ignored or silenced under patriarchy.”

Throughout the Empowered programme, Jiayi’s work evolved from documenting and photographing artworks with a body as a canvas for calligraphy to a fully immersive performance, alongside completing her MA in Contemporary Art Practice at Edinburgh College of Art.

“I am more clear-minded about my plan and intentions now. The first time we met on Empowered I introduced myself as an art student in college, but now I feel I can proudly announce that I am a creative artist who works hard. It has enabled me to be seen more and embrace new possibilities. When I was asked to share some skills and host a workshop in the Uprising program, I realised that I could do more than photography. I am so happy to see everyone on the programme improving, attempting new practices and creating amazing work.”
