We’re excited to announce a participatory arts performance from our 2021 Make Work artist, JoAnne Haines. Dancing with Colours brings JoAnne’s vast experience together into her first full-length, independent performance piece.
Dancing with Colours is a joyful, sensory and slightly messy(!) new dance performance. Using the space as a canvas, this vibrant experience is all about transformation, as JoAnne explores how art is in everything and everybody we encounter each day. This new inclusive performance has been co-created with audiences of learning-disabled people and families in Bradford.
As well as having heaps of fun and seeing the full colour spectrum of the world around us, this new performance makes us consider the power of art, in being able to transform both spaces, and also how we feel and interact with others.
Audiences will join learning-disabled artist JoAnne Haines to expressively dance with paint and create giant, colourful sheets of visual art. This new show explores just how performance can be made in collaboration with the audience and combines JoAnne’s experience as a performer and facilitator to celebrate creativity in everyone.
"Dancing With Colours is exciting because it's new and it will challenge people's expectations of their own creativity. I want people to watch the show and feel like they can be artists. Art is everywhere - out in the open air, the clouds, the water - there's street art - you can find colour everywhere.
JoAnne Haines
Everyone is welcome to come along and have some fun at the performances. Audiences can choose if and how they would like to participate and can simply observe if they wish, audience members will be standing and moving about the space but seats will be available for those who need them.

JoAnne has toured nationally and internationally with Mind the Gap; recent work with the company includes:

JoAnne’s own work is multisensory, participatory and accessible with a focus on learning-disabled inclusion. She believes everybody can be an artist and has the right to create art. Her project Colour Full (co-creation workshops for people with LD/complex needs) was commissioned by BEYOND Festival (2018) & Unlimited (2019) and adapted to a digital version for Southbank Centre Unlimited Festival (2021). JoAnne sees her audiences as people who take part in the work rather than simply watching.
