DeNada are revisiting and restaging an existing full-length narrative dance production (premiered 2021) ahead of an international tour.

Mariposa (‘butterfly’ in Spanish) is choreographer Carlos Pons Guerra’s queer reimagining of Puccini’s seminal opera, Madame Butterfly. An operatic dance drama, it transports Puccini’s Orientalist libretto to post-revolution Cuba, to a dockland world of faded showgirls, hopeful rent boys, troubled sailors and divine queer spirits. Engulfed in a tropical storm of repressed desires, the production is a passionate and deeply moving exploration of what we are ready to sacrifice in order to be loved and accepted.

This process of restaging will be about developing existing material and finding more depth in a narrative. It will be a great opportunity to observe how character can be communicated through the body; methods of learning and adapting existing choreographic material and how we can make existing and problematic narratives relevant to minorities.

The production blends several dance styles- contemporary, ballet, and Latin dance, with a diverse cast in terms of artistic backgrounds.

If you need support with completing the form, or you need to submit your expression of interest another way, please drop us an email at hello@bdproducinghub.co.uk

The production deals with themes around sexuality, gender, sexual and gender identity and colonialism.

Both venues are fully accessible.
