This Series of Care 2-part workshop is for artists and creatives of Bradford to enhance their awareness and understanding of LGBTQQIA+ audiences and those living with disability through an interactive workshop hosted by Quiplash.
This 2-part workshops will demonstrate how disability and queerness are connected, and touch on historical, cultural and regional differences for both disabled and LGBTQ+ communities. These sessions will be relaxed with breaks and plenty of space to chat and ask questions.
This event is hosted by Quiplash, who in their own words, are here to take space for queer crips (quips), further queer crip performance, queer accessibility, and f*ck sh!t up! Read more about them and their amazing work in our Meet the Host section.
This session is part of our Series of Care and is open to all artists and creatives of Bradford.
About the sessions
This day will comprise of 2 sessions of which you are welcome to attend one or both.
- 10 AM – 12.30 PM: Disability Awareness
- 12.30 PM: Lunch (all welcome)
- 1.30 – 4 PM: LGBTQ+ Awareness
Disability Awareness session
During this session, we will
- Cover some of the major principles around disability and accessibility including models of disability and principles of disability justice
- Unpack how language works in different disabled communities and identify what is considered good practice in the UK
- Engage in exercises that help people think through the principles we discuss and how they can apply this knowledge to their own experiences
- Workshop different tactics for embedding access into different spaces and ways of working
- Have a lot of time for questions and chatting
- Cover some of the major principles around LGTBQ+ identities, activism and politics
- Unpack how language works in different LGBTQ+ communities and identify what is considered good practice in the UK
- Engage in exercises that help people think through the principles we discuss and how they can apply this knowledge to their own experiences
- Workshop different tactics for making LGBTQ+ inclusive spaces and ways of working
- Have a lot of time for questions and chatting

- An artist or creative freelancer living in or working in the Bradford district
- 18 years old or over
- Creating work or hosting events that engage a variety of different communities across the District
- Committed to developing your understanding around creating safe, inclusive and welcoming spaces for all
Meet the hosts
Amelia Lander-Cavallo and Al Lander-Cavallo
Both they/them
Quiplash is a creative, performance and consulting CIC that looks to take space for deaf, disabled and neurodiverse people across the LGBTQQIA+ spectrum. It is led by an actual quip married couple, Al and Amelia Lander-Cavallo. Quiplash has two strands: performance and art-making that prioritises queer disabled performers and embedded access with a specialism in integrated and creative audio description. Quiplash also works as an access consultant and trainer in audio description, disability justice, and disability awareness.

Our Series of Care is a programme of workshops and training days designed specifically to nurture and empower artists and creatives of Bradford. With a focus on wellbeing, our Series of Care has included sessions on creative confidence and tenacity, sustainable working practices, avoiding burnout, and knowing your worth and your rights when working as a freelancer in the arts and culture sector.
Bradford Producing Hub is a needs-led organisation and we constantly listen to the challenges and barriers faced by artists and creative freelancers in Bradford. We design programmes of support and training to help overcome some of these and support artists work towards achieving their creative potential.
Yes, we can offer bursaries to attend this event. These are not means tested, but please only request a bursary if this is something you need to enable you to participate. The bursary is there to cover your time where you would otherwise be working in a freelance capacity. If you are participating as an employee of an organisation, we would expect this time to be covered as part of your working hours.
The bursary available for a half-day session is £50, if you book both sessions you can request a total of £75.

Yes, we can cover travel and any other access costs that may otherwise present a barrier to you being able to participate in this event. Access costs include things like childcare and other caring costs; BSL, language and other interpretation costs; as well as access support workers, or any other access costs you might face.
